My friends always do this [BIG ANNOUNCEMENT]

Did you have a good Thanksgiving weekend? My family and I had a gorgeous one in the beautiful Texas Hill Country!  We read books, played Monopoly and hiked.  Sooooooo relaxing…...

I even got to enjoy my birthday as part of the long weekend on December 1.

Speaking of birthdays - because mine falls on the first of the month - I often have friends or family who don't see my birthday until they turn the calendar and WHAM - there I am on the 1st!  They then call and apologize because they almost forgot!

Introducing Step 1: What To Say In My Launch

Happy Thursday! I was talking to a client recently who, when we talked about what to say in her marketing and for her launch, she said, 'Heather, I have no idea what to say!"

We talked about what blocks were in her way, and she said,

  • I feel like I am shouting in my email
  • I'm not 100% sure that I'm tapping in to the needs and wants of my ideal client
  • I say the same thing over and over, and it's sounding like a broken record
  • How do I say what I need to say so it doesn't sound like it's all about me?

And I sent her off to do something creative.  She was a little shocked, as she thought that this would be procrastinating!

I assured her that no - she was actually going to stir up her creative juices and then we would sit down and get clear.

Clear on who her audience is. Clear on what to say.  Clear on how to relate to them on an personal and authentic level.And we did.

We dove deep into the needs, wants and desires of her client and came up with a list CHOCKED FULL of inspirational ideas of her launch and beyond.

She left our intensive feeling empowered and ready to CONNECT with her tribe in a deeper way than she ever had before.

3 Tips to Take Your Marketing Copy Up A Notch

Remember my challenge from last week?  Have you tried something new (or even enjoyed something creative that you normally do)?  Has it spurned any creative juices for your marketing? Maybe you've had fun with the creative part, but when it comes to the marketing part, you're stumped.

Today I want to show you how use that creativity to truly engage your audience through your marketing copy.  

Sit down.  Are you ready?  Close your eyes and and imagine ONE client.  This could be someone you have loved working with in the past.  This could be you a few steps ago.

Walk in their shoes for a day and answer these specific questions:

1. What is keeping him/her up at night (Pain point)?

I always ask my private clients this question, and here's some examples that they have given me:

Emotional eater:  Fear of being overweight, sluggish, tired and uncomfortable for the rest of their lives.

Flight attendant:  She is not waking up refreshed.  She is dragging.

New parent:  Their baby is not sleeping well and they are going crazy.

2. How specific can you be?  Can you take the detail up a notch?  What scenarios can your describe?

While the above examples are good, I always encourage them to get MORE specific. We dive into the details - like this:

Emotional eater: 

  • Her clothes don’t fit right and are old and frumpy – not stylish at all (mom clothes!  Drab colors!)
  • She is not comfortable with herself, her wardrobe, the way she looks in the mirror.
  • She prefers to stay in on a Friday night because she would rather not deal.  She hiding out from life.

Flight attendant:

  • She is sleeping in different bed every night.
  • She had a late night flight and then an early morning flight.
  • She went out and had fun the night before but now needs to be alert in the morning.

New parent:

  • She can't concentrate at work because she is so sleep deprived.
  • She is resentful towards her baby and not bonding like she wants to because the baby is crying all the time.
  • She almost had a fender bender with the baby in the car because she was not alert, and it really scared her.

3. How will he/she feel when it is all better (Pleasure point)? What will that look like?

Now we need to get out of all that pain and describe how their client will feel when that pain is taken away.  We need to describe how much better their life will be (and again, being super specific):

Emotional eater:

  • She feels fit, toned, flexible and strong.
  • She feels stylish and takes pride in her appearance.
  • She feels like being more engaged in social situations and feels like going OUT in life!

Flight attendant:

  • She is feeling rested, confident and centered - ready for anything.
  • She is energetic and alert.
  • She’s appreciative for this glamorous life that is full of travel and freedom.

New parent:

  • She can better function at work and is more able to cope with the demands of a new baby.
  • She can truly bond and enjoy her baby during awake times.
  • She can begin to lose the baby weight because she is rested and can actually focus on eating right (instead of reaching for the cookies).

Pretty simple, huh?  And here's the best part:

These descriptions can be used for ALL of your marketing language -  for your launch and beyond!  

Yep - this exercise gives you SO MUCH content to pull from for your emails, your social media and more.  And here's the thing.  It works.

But it helps to have a sounding board.  It's great to dive deep and get crystal clear with your descriptions in a "marketing jam session" with your launch coach, which is why I am so excited to offer:

The one thing you must avoid in a launch

It's Friday!

Back when I was in the corporate world, we followed the rules with our marketing.  It was very safe, structured, and well - to me personally - boring (I was, after all, marketing bio-technology materials!)    

We were required to do things the "right" way and had to go through many levels of approval before telling the world about our products. And that was OK for me at the time.

Because I was marketing behind the "safety" of a corporate brand - it didn't matter if it didn't light me up.  

It was OK to play it safe because it wasn't "me" I was selling.

Fast forward several years and I became a brand new health coach trying to get myself and my business known.  While I considered myself a rather experienced marketer, this time I was marketing "me."

And that was a whole new experience!

I was terrified to get "out there" and share more about myself.

 My marketing attempts felt forced and icky.

I was so worried about "bugging" people that I got stuck and couldn't do anything.

 I was terrified! 

I began to realize that marketing myself as a coach (where i AM my product) was VERY different from corporate marketing.  This entrepreneurial marketing:

Requires us to be visible.

Makes us vulnerable to other's opinions (which may not always be nice ones!)

Scares the crap out of us!

And yet we gotta do it.

We have to find a way to grab the attention of our potential clients.  Without a gateway to talk with them, we are left with a lot of closed doors in our faces or unanswered phone calls.  And that leads to a very unsuccessful business.

I really had no clue how the heck I was gong to get "out there."

So I got support.

 I hired some coaches to help me figure out this "marketing myself" thing.

And I tried implementing some of what they taught me.  And it felt horrible.  

My husband look at my stuff and said, "This isn't you!"  and I had to agree.    

I wasn't marketing in a way that felt authentic.

I wasn't showcasing ME in a relatable way.

I was following the formula, and it didn't work.  That's when a lightbulb went on:

I can take what I am learning and put my own spin on it.

I began to infuse "me" in my marketing.

I followed the structure but did it "my way" and in a way that felt right for me.

And it worked!

 I became more and more comfortable with being visible.  

I began to pull out my old marketing skills and sprinkled the best-of-the-best into what I was doing.

The combination worked.

These days have a launch plan - but it's Heather's launch plan - one that works just for me and feels so right!

Pre-launch success secrets for a powerful first impression

I've got a brand new and upleveled website banner (above)!  What do you think? Why a new one, you ask?  It comes down to 2 words:

First impressions

You see, launching a program or product is a powerful way to make a first impression in the marketplace.  It's the most successful way to stake a claim for who you are, who you serve and how.

Successful launchers use the power of the launch to reach out to people outside of their social circle.  They understand that a great launch is not only one that gets them clients, but one that also builds their list.

In fact one of the best ways to build your list is with launching!  Here's how:

  1. You set the stage for your launch by getting the pieces in place to look good online and to hold an event such as a teleseminar.
  2. You create a buzz outside of your current networking circle to get people exited and draw them in (i.e. get them register with their email) to attend your event.
  3. You host a teleseminar to share more about yourself, reveal helpful tips and to introduce them to your offer.
  4. You enroll new people into your program or to buy your product.

And, not all of the people who attend your teleseminar will buy from you right now.  In fact less than 5% of your list are ready to buy from you right now.

So, for all those newbies who just got on your list with this launch, it's vital to make a good first impression.

This new audience is attracted to you to because they think you may be able to help them.  They hear about you through your launch - which is the same as meeting you at a local networking event.  You want to look spiffy and be on good behavior, right?

Then, once you have these new people on your list, your future marketing efforts (like consistent email) can build a relationship with them so that when they are finally ready to buy, you will be there.

So, getting ready for a launch is like getting ready to SHINE.  And yes, I know words like "shine" and "being visible" that can seem SUPER scary, so today I'm going to share 2 easy ways to prepare for a GREAT first impression so that when you launch - you'll be golden.

1.  Uplevel your headshot

Using a professional photo in your marketing - one that really shows your vibe and your personality - is UBER important in making a good first impression in your launch.

Use this headshot consistently across your online presence, which includes your website and on all social media platforms.  This consistency is key to building up your recognition and your professionalism.

If you have been following me for a while you have been watching me uplevel my headshots like crazy.   I have done this because

  • Each time I have a new photoshoot, it upevels my vibe and boosts my visibility comfort level.
  • I'm always ensuring that my online presence reflects my business growth.

2.  Share more on social media

Social media is key to a successful online business these days.  Whether you're a Twitter fanatic, a Facebook addict, or a Pinterest girl - it's wise to boost your likability and trustworthiness in preparation for your launch.   You can do it 2 ways:

  • Educate your fans/friends/followers on your topic with tips or nuggets of information - without asking for anything in return.  Give them a hint that something cool is coming to peak their interest. Then, when you are ready to make a splash with a launch, people will be listening.
  • Reveal "behind the scenes" in your business. This is a baby step into being more visible.  But here's an incentive:  People LOVE behind the scenes scoop, so tell them about your amazing clients or hint at what you are working on.  It will add to your likability factor make people want to know more about you.

Getting "prepped" for your launch like this will allow you to have a solid and totally professional first impression when you launch.

Get dorky to calm your visibility fears and to keep moving forward

Did you know that you are more than enough? I bet somewhere inside you know that you are a frickin' POWERHOUSE and that the world won't know what hit them when you launch your next big thing, right?

But what about those times when the monkey mind kicks in?

You know, the negative thoughts that come up that stop you in your tracks. They may be thoughts like

"Who do you think you are?" "You don't know enough!" "Can you really pull this off?" "You don't know what you are doing!" "You're never going to be successful!"

These are the thoughts that come to you in the middle of the night, during a workout, or while driving in the car. They are such downers, aren't they?

So how's a girl to banish those and keep on truckin'?

I mean, we all know that it's wise to reach out for support at time like this, whether to a supportive friend, a colleague or your coach.

However, what are you supposed to do if it's 2:00 a.m.?

Do something totally dorky.

Yep - some kind of guilty pleasure to calm that monkey mind right down. Something to take your mind out of that freak-out mode and into something that causes you to concentrate or zone-out so that you can calm down and shift your perception.

Yes, I could get wise and tell you to be enlightened meditate. But I'm talking DORKY. Something goofy and FUN that lets you BE in the moment.

Here a few suggestions:

  • Word Puzzles (Yep - my monkey mind is TOTALLY addicted. And my new reading glasses take it up a notch too, don't you think?)
  • Chewing bubble gum in a 7-year old sorta way (gum cracking is a MUST)
  • Way too much computer solitaire than you are comfortable admitting
  • Singing in your car to an old 80's song at the top of your lungs
  • Confessing everything to your cat
  • Knitting a VERY large scarf
  • Doodling, painting, or playing with glue (and yes, in a childish, playful way!)

See what I mean? SILLY but it's cheap therapy!

So, the next time you have a "Debbie Downer thought" STOP it in its tracks and keep moving forward with your launch, with being visible, and with standing in your own amazing-ness. OK?

You are meant for a bigger pond

Hey rock star  - Yep - I said rock star!

I know you are OFF THE CHARTS amazing because you are a female entrepreneur.  And being an entrepreneur and building your own business takes GUTS. 

It takes dedication, persistence and above all, passion.

I know you have an amazingly big heart too.  You are probably on a mission to help others live better lives, and you know what? The world needs you!

So why are you playing small?

You know what I mean.  Playing small means staying "safe" in your business.  You're doing what's comfortable, like waiting for that referral to come in, or tweaking one more page on your website.

Playing small means hovering under the radar.  It means not being too visible because it's too scary!

You may have been getting just enough business through word of mouth to limp along.  And the thought of "going bigger" with your marketing yourself makes you want to throw up.

You may have actually tried to launch a product or program and it didn't go so well so now you feel like a failure.  You may have gotten totally tapped out and overwhelmed in the process and you are thinking "I'll NEVER do that AGAIN!" 

You may be dreaming of how to reach more clients, but the thought of "How-the-heck-am-I-going-to-find-them?" makes you want to mope and eat chocolate.

And I'm going to be honest.  It's much easier to stay comfortable in our business and do the same things over and over.  Marketing yourself with a product launch may sound HARD and TERRIFYING.

But you know what? You are meant for a bigger pond!

And to do that you're going to have to do things a little differently than you've done before.

Your ideal clients are OUT THERE.  They may be across the world, or they may be in your backyard.  Either way, they may be desperately looking for someone like you but can't find you.

They maybe be Googling or looking on YouTube or social media and not finding what they need.

In order for you to connect with them, you need to step up your game.

You need to launch your product or program and declare that this is what you do!

I regularly get contacted by potential clients all across the world.  And you know what - it feels AMAZING.

When I was seeing clients locally and in person, it was great.  But I knew that I wanted to take my business online and not be limited by geography. 

I knew I wanted to leverage the internet and connect to amazing women all over the planet.

My product launches established me and got me connected to my "tribe" - my ideal clients. 

Now I not only have a thriving business but I know that my mission of empowering successful women entrepreneurs to live life on their own terms is coming true.

And that makes me so happy I could cry.

I want that for you!
